Car Insurance — Things You Should Know

28 October 2009 No Comment

When you buy car insurance, you enter into a contract with the insurance company. If your car meets with an accident, you will be eligible for compensation for the losses under the contract. Your part of the contract is to pay the premium.

Car insurance provides property, liability and medical coverage. Property coverage pays for damage to or theft of your car. Your legal responsibility for bodily injury or property damage caused by your car is taken care of by liability coverage.

The cost of treating injuries, rehabilitation and sometimes lost wages and funeral expenses are paid by the medical coverage.

Most car insurance policies are valid for six month to a year. The policy must be renewed on expiration.

The law in all states require you to have some form of car insurance if you own or operate a car.

Different states have different penalties for driving a car without insurance. In some states, your car will be impounded. There are heavy fines in some states. Serious trouble. That’s what’s in store for you if your car is involved in an accident with insurance. You will have to pay out of your own pocket for any injuries or damages.

Your credit history, the age and type of your car will play an important role in determining the rate you have to pay for car insurance.

You are responsible for providing insurance for any car you own regardless of who is operating the car. Your car will be operating illegally if it does not have insurance.

Finally, a few savings tips…

1. Getting married will bring down your rate by a huge margin. Insurers have statistical data that show that people are less reckless and much more careful on the road when they get married. Insurers will tell you that their records show that married people make fewer claims. Furthermore, when they do make those claims, they usually cost less on the average than those married by their unmarried counterparts.

2. If you want to keep your rates down, do NOT “pimp your ride.” Doing such reduces your car’s safety and, therefore, warrants higher rates as far as the insurer is concerned.

3. Do you know that some folks are paying much more in auto insurance because of where their homes are? Also note that a neighbor not too far away might fall under a lower crime zone than you — This affects rates.

So check with your agent before you commit to a new home. I know: That isn’t usually an issue when you’re looking for a home but it’s really important.

Remember, you might live in this home for up to 20 years or more. If its location makes you pay up to $200 more in premium, that will add up to $4,000 within that time frame.

4. Never leave your car unlocked and running while you dash in to get something. The only easier thing for a thief would be if you handed over your keys as a gift. Every thief checks how easy a target is before making a move. It certainly doesn’t get easier for a thief than an unlocked car with a running engine.

5. Using your parents’ auto insurance policy is a good alternative for you an under 25. If you are of driving age, then your parents certainly are far above 25 years which means they’re better risk drivers.

There are two things you must do to make this possible: The car must be registered in your parents’ name and you must live with them. This means that by law they own the car. If the benefits of “independence” outweigh your auto insurance savings then this is definitely not alternative for you.
